Our story

From 1984 to today — the story of Zanmi Lasanté–Paris

Our journey

  • 1984 Father Lafontant and Doctor Paul Farmer — physician, anthropologist and Professor at Harvard's School of Public Health — create the Bon Sauveur Hospital in Cange (Haiti's Central Plateau) to serve a local population impoverished by the construction of the Péligre hydroelectric dam.
  • 1993 Paul Farmer asks his friends Christine and Patrick Murray to create an association in France to support the hospital in partnership with Partners In Health and Zanmi Lasanté in Haiti. Zanmi Lasanté Paris (ZLP), a non-profit association, is born.
  • 2001 LAVI NOUVO, "A New Life": Christine Murray travels to Cange, where the heads of the local schools ask her to organise a French-language training programme for teachers. ZLP focuses on actions to improve the quality of education, food security and development.
  • Since 2004 ZLP supports Lénéus Joseph and Jean Robert Séjour, founders of farmers' associations and local schools. La Pléiade and La Main Divine serve 900 pupils, from kindergarten to high school, achieving strong results in state examinations.
  • 2010 After the earthquake, ZLP funds the rebuilding of 75 traditional Creole homes — a project supported by the Fondation de France.
  • 2014 Pro Bono Prize from the City of Paris for the land tenure security project: 80 owners receive an official, certified land title.
  • 2021–2022 Birth of economic autonomy: ZLP supports the creation of two local start-ups — Christo-Formidable (drinking water) and Zafe Evolysion (tree nurseries and orchard) — and the arrival of computing in school, powered by solar energy.
  • 2022 Doctor Paul Farmer passes away. ZLP carries on its work with the same determination, alongside Partners In Health and Zanmi Lasanté.
  • 2025 Despite the security crisis and the attack on Mirebalais, which displaces many residents towards the northern Central Plateau, ZLP's projects continue: 1,000 pupils fed every day at La Pléiade, and a computer room nearing completion at La Nouvelle Orientation.
